The Relative Strength Index has been on traders’ charts since 1978 — and it is still misused by most of them. Here is where RSI came from, why it has endured for nearly half a century, and the specific, disciplined way it is used inside the Key Levels strategy: not as a buy-and-sell trigger, but as a timing gate.
RSI is probably the most famous indicator in all of technical analysis — and probably the most abused. The problem was never the tool. The problem is that traders were taught to use it backwards. Used the right way, at the right place, it is one of the sharpest timing instruments you can put on a chart.
The Relative Strength Index was created by J. Welles Wilder Jr., a mechanical engineer turned technical analyst, and published in his 1978 book New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems. That single book is one of the most influential ever written in the field — it also introduced Average True Range (ATR), the Directional Movement Index (ADX), and Parabolic SAR. An entire generation of tools traders still rely on today came out of it.
RSI was Wilder’s answer to a simple question: how do you measure momentum in a way that can be compared across any instrument and any timeframe? His solution was a bounded oscillator that moves between 0 and 100, calculated from the average size of recent gains versus recent losses — by default, over 14 periods.
Because RSI is normalized to a 0–100 scale, a reading of 75 means the same thing on ES as it does on gold or a micro contract. That portability is why it survived when most 1970s indicators were forgotten.
RSI does not measure price. It measures the speed and conviction of price change. When gains are large and consistent relative to losses, RSI rises toward 100. When losses dominate, it falls toward 0. Wilder’s original interpretation drew two lines in the sand:
Here is where most traders go wrong: they treat “overbought” as a sell signal and “oversold” as a buy signal, anywhere on the chart. In a strong trend, that is a fast way to lose money. A powerful uptrend can hold RSI above 70 for hours while price keeps climbing — shorting every “overbought” print just feeds the trend that is running you over.
RSI is not a standalone trade trigger. It is a momentum context reading. On its own, an extreme RSI tells you nothing about where to act. It only becomes powerful when you combine it with a location that already matters — a key level. The level tells you where. RSI tells you whether momentum is exhausted when you get there.
Inside the Key Levels approach, RSI is never asked to pick trades by itself. It is used as a gate — a condition that a setup must satisfy before it earns attention at a level. The logic is deliberately strict.
When price pushes into a key level — a Camarilla pivot, a gamma wall, a value-area edge — the strategy asks a second question before considering a reversal: is momentum actually stretched into this level? If RSI is sitting at a band edge as price arrives, the move has over-extended into resistance or support, and a reaction is far more likely. If RSI is comfortably mid-range, the level touch is treated as weak — price arrived with fuel still in the tank, and fading it is low-probability.
The highest-conviction RSI read is divergence at a key level. If price grinds to a new extreme through the level but RSI makes a lower high (or higher low), the new price is being made on less momentum than the last one. The push into the level is hollow. Stack that on top of order-flow absorption and you have a premium reversal setup.
RSI cuts both ways. For continuation setups, its position relative to the 50 line confirms the regime is intact — a pullback into a level that holds above 50 in an uptrend says momentum never actually broke, only paused. That supports trading with the trend off the level rather than against it.
The discipline is the point: no RSI extreme is a trade, and no key level is a trade. A key level plus exhausted momentum plus order-flow confirmation — that is a trade. RSI is one gate of several, and it has to agree.
Nearly fifty years after Wilder introduced it, RSI endures because it does one job honestly: it normalizes momentum so you can judge exhaustion objectively instead of by feel. It fails only when it is asked to do a job it was never built for — calling tops and bottoms in a vacuum. Anchored to a real level and confirmed by real flow, it remains one of the cleanest timing tools available to a futures trader.
